Venus Williams Biography
Venus Williams became the dominant female player of 2000,
that year winning the Wimbledon
singles title, the US Open, and Olympic gold in Sydney. She also
won the Wimbledon doubles title, partnered by her younger sister,
Serena Williams. She retained the Wimbledon and the US Open singles
titles in 2001, but in 2003 was defeated by her sister in the Wimbledon
singles final. She was the first African-American to reach the number
one ranking in either the men's or women's game. At the beginning
of 2004 she had a world ranking of Number 3. At Wimbledon, Williams
defeated defending champion Maria
Sharapova in a semifinal 7-6(2), 6-1, breaking Sharapova's serve
four times. (Sharapova had lost only one service game to that point.)
This marked the sixth consecutive year that at least one of the
Williams sisters had reached the final, and it was Venus's fifth
appearance in the Wimbledon final in the past 6 years.
